As the weather cools down, I find myself drawn to a seasonal ritual, of cleaning out my bathroom cupboard and letting go of things that no longer serve me. There is something about spending time indoors that inspires me to reassess my beauty collection and to pull out those forgotten items lurking in the back of the cabinet.

Inevitably, during my most recent cleanout I rediscovered my collection of makeup brushes. These trusty tools are indispensable for creating our winter looks, but we are constantly dipping them in powders, creams and liquids and tossing them into makeup bags, creating the perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.

Dermatologists recommend regular cleaning to prevent the buildup of product residue, dirt and oil, which can lead to unexpected breakouts, skin irritation and even infection. You know your brushes need replacing when they start losing their shape, shedding bristles excessively or developing an odour.

Cleaning your brushes doesn’t have to be a tiresome chore; it can form part of your wellness routine. After all, it’s all about looking after your skin. So, why not light a candle with your favourite, calming scent (maybe our soy wax blend Relax candle) or pop on a diffuser to help turn this task into something to look forward to.

Make sure the water is lukewarm and rinse the excess product off the bristles of the brush. Avoid submerging your brush so the glue isn’t impacted, and the brush material isn't damaged.

There are plenty of options when it comes to cleaning your brushes, but why not use something gentle that is intended for your face. Try our Gentle Micellar Cleansing Water or Rosewater Hydration Antioxidant Micellar Cleansing Water to help purify and remove makeup from your makeup tools.

Avoid using plain soap and water as this can dry out the brushes.

Pro Tip: For a quick refresh, keep some micellar water in a small spray bottle to spritz on brushes between deep cleans. Swirl on a towel or paper towel to remove residue.

Apply micellar water to each brush head and swirl the brushes in circular motions in a shallow bowl. Rinse and repeat until the liquid is clear.

Now that they’ve had some tender loving care, you can gently squeeze the excess liquid from the brush heads with a towel, reshape the bristles and lay them flat on the towel or use a makeup brush holder, pointing the bristles down to avoid loosening the glue in the ferrule. Leave the brushes for 24 hours to dry completely before storing them upright.

Pro Tip: You might want to invest in a textured silicone cleaning mat to work out stubborn products.

Clean brushes perform better, distributing makeup evenly and blending effortlessly. This winter, reset your brush collection with the steps above. Your skin will thank you!

First things first (the fun part) in your recycling journey, enjoy your Golden Hour Eyeshadow Book, love it, use it and have some fun with it! Once your palette has been loved and you’re ready to go through the grieving process (of having to let it go) follow along with this 5 step guide to recycling:

Step one:

Pull out the removable mirror and keep it for years to come. Personally, I take mine with me whenever I’m getting ready at a friend’s house for girls’ night or in the car when I’m running late and have to do a last minute (and sadly rushed) makeup look once I've arrived at my destination. It is the perfect size - small enough to fit in my makeup bag and little car compartment but big enough to see the reflection of my entire face and makeup look.

Step two:

Pull on the small brown elastic band until both ends are removed from the palette. What's my favourite part of this step you ask? Turning it into a hair band! I don’t know about you, but I have to search my entire house for hair ties regularly as somehow I always lose them. Having a new hair tie that also matches my hair colour is like I've struck gold! 

Step three:

Peel back on the cardboard backing from the underside of the palette until it is completely removed (this and the next few steps are like free ASMR). Recycle this backing.

Step four:

This one has to be my favourite of the five steps (it is quite satisfying). Using a paper clip, push through the small holes on the underside of the palette to remove the eyeshadow pans. Once removed, clean the residual product with warm water.

Step five:

The last step! Make sure you have recycled all twelve eyeshadow pans and cardboard into your curbside recycling.

• The myth that you don’t need sunscreen in cooler months may increase the risk of sunburn and other harmful effects of sun exposure.
• Dry weather means skin will produce more sebum.

Hydrate

1. With a fluffy brush, blend ‘Sandstone’ into the crease. Sweep any remaining shadow across the eyelid
2. Apply ‘Shell’ towards the brow bone to create a seamless transition and eliminate harsh lines
3. Using a flat brush, apply ‘Sunrise’ across the mobile eyelid, keeping it below the crease
4. With a smaller fluffy brush, apply ‘Twilight’ to the outer corners for depth, blending into the crease
5. For the final touch, use your ring finger to dab ‘Sunset’ onto the center of your lid and let this shimmer bring a little sparkle to the eyes!

How to recycle your palettes

STEP 1

Begin by carefully scoring the edges of your eyeshadow palette with a blunt knife. This will help to loosen the components and make it easier to disassemble.

STEP 2

Pry apart the outer casing from the inner palette. Once separated, remove the elastic band that holds the palette closed.

TIP: reduce waste by upcycling the elastic band into a hair tie.

STEP 3

Using the same blunt knife, carefully score along the cardboard layers of the inner palette. This will allow you to separate the cardboard layers with greater ease.

STEP 4

With your blunt knife, carefully lift and remove the eyeshadow pans from the cardboard casing. Clean any residual eyeshadow powder by rinsing the pans in warm water. Ensure that all is removed to ensure effective recycling.

STEP 5

Once the components are all disassembled and cleaned, responsibly dispose of them into your curbside recycling. The metal eyeshadow pans and cardboard can be placed into your curbside recycling.

Well done! Your eyeshadow palettes can now successfully go on to live another life.

What’s the 411 on the ‘glass skin’ trend? This term is being used to describe skin that isn't just free from blemishes, but is radiant and shines from within, so much so that your skin looks like porcelain. Originating from the Korean phrase ‘yuri pibu’, which translates to ‘glass skin’, the concept of glass skin is attainable through living a healthy lifestyle, hydrating and nourishing the skin with skin loving ingredients.  

This trend has rolled over into the beauty community with the rise of ‘glass skin makeup’. Which is essentially a similar concept to glass skin but without the rigorous 12-step-skincare-routine. Luminous, Pore Less & Porcelain Skin 

Porcelain skin starts with a flawless and hydrated base – using our Soft Focus Pore Perfecting Primer in the t-zone of your face will help minimise pores, imperfections and help reduce excess shine throughout the day. Combining this with our Luminous Pearl Perfecting Primer on your cheeks will help hydrate skin for a radiant appearance.  

These primers are infused with ingredients your skin will love - Jojoba, Pomegranate, Vitamin E, B5, C and Rosehip. Use these two primers alone for a more natural look, or move on to our Mineral Tinted Moisturiser for more coverage. 

 

Your Skin but Better – Mineral Tinted Moisturiser 

For additional lightweight coverage to enhance your complexion, introduce our new Mineral Tinted Moisturiser with SPF 50+ into your glass skin makeup routine. This radiant Mineral Tinted Moisturiser has very high protection SPF50+ and contains mineral zinc physical sunscreen filters to help protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. As we applied the luminous primer to the cheeks of the face, this will help transform the the Mineral Tinted Moisturiser to be dewier in these areas for that glass-like-appearance, whilst keeping your t-zone under control. For further coverage under the eyes or to conceal blemishes, lightly pat in our Under Eye Cushion Concealer once the Mineral Tinted Moisturiser has been applied. TIP: Don’t overdo it on the pressed powder to ensure the base of the makeup is kept light and dewy for that glass-like appearance.
